In 1941, when her paternal grandfather became very ill, the family relocated to Merced. They moved into her grandparents’ home, attended Weber Grammar High School in Stockton and later Stockton High School excelled in academics and graduated from high school at seventeen. 

At the age of 18, Leigh was discovered by actress Norma Shearer, who helped her to sign a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a prominent film studio. From there, Leigh went on to become a well-known and respected figure in the entertainment industry.

Leigh died on October 3, 2004, of vasculitis in Beverly Hills, California, aged 77.
