Since 2021, Nandy has held the position of Shadow Secretary of State for Leveling Up, Housing, and Communities. She joined the Labor Party and has served as Wigan’s Member of Parliament (MP) since 2010.

She later worked as Neil Gerrard’s assistant in Walthamstow, a researcher for the Centerpoint homelessness organization, and a senior policy consultant at The Children’s Society.

She also served on the Hammersmith and Fulham London Borough Council as a Labor councilor representing the Hammersmith Broadway ward.

From 2010 to 2012, Nandy served as Tessa Jowell’s Parliamentary Private Secretary. From 2012 to 2013, he served as the Shadow Minister for Children. From 2012 to 2015, he served as the Shadow Minister for Charity and Civil Society, having responsibility for Labour Policy on the Third Sector.

From 2015 until she quit in 2016 to co-chair Owen Smith’s leadership challenge to Jeremy Corbyn, she served as Amber Rudd’s shadow energy secretary.

Nandy ran for the Labor Party leadership in 2020 after serving as a backbencher for an additional four years. She finished third with 16.3% of the vote, trailing only Keir Starmer and Rebecca Long-Bailey.

Starmer later named Nandy as Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in April 2020. Nandy was chosen to serve as the Shadow Secretary of State for Leveling Up, Housing, and Communities after a personnel change in November 2021.
