Matt attended Indiana University Bloomington where he became a student assistant for the football program during his sophomore year.

He earned his bachelor’s in Business and master’s degree in Sports Administration at Indiana University

His coaching career includes early stints at Indiana, Butler, Northern Illinois, and Wisconsin. In 2011, he led Northern Illinois to the MAC championship, and in 2012 led Wisconsin to the Big Ten Championship Game.

Matt previously was also the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Maryland, LSU, Pittsburgh, NC State, Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, Butler, and Indiana.

In 2013, he was the offensive coordinator at NC State under head coach, Dave Doeren. He had previously worked under Doeren at Northern Illinois in 2011.

After the 2014 season, Matt agreed to a new 3-year contract with NC State and was subsequently let go by NC State following the 2015 season.

In 2016, Matt joined the Pitt as offensive coordinator. He was named one of five finalists for the 2016 Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

In December of the same year (2016), Matt was hired to become the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at LSU. They mutually parted ways on January 5, 2018.

On January 22, 2018, Matt joined the University of Maryland as their offensive coordinator. In August he became interim head coach for the Maryland Terrapins.

On January 15, 2020, Matt became the Pittsburgh Steelers’s quarterbacks coach. In January 2021, he was promoted to offensive coordinator of the Steelers, replacing Randy Fichtner.

In November 2023, Matt hit the headlines after he was fired by the Steelers on Tuesday, November 21, two days after another game of offensive struggles for the team.

“Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. I appreciate Matt’s hard work and dedication, and I wish him the best moving forward in his career,” Steelers’s head coach, Mike Tomlin said in a statement on the team’s X account.
