Derwin James parents-American football strong safety, Derwin James was born on August 3rd, 1996 in Haines City, Florida in the United States of America.

James is a cousin of Vince Williams and Karlos Williams, both former Florida State Seminoles players, as well as Mike James, former Miami Hurricanes running back.

He is also the second cousin of former Miami Hurricanes and NFL star running back Edgerrin James. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

James accepted a scholarship offer from Florida State University after his first year of high school and committed to play college football there as a freshman.

James stated on December 5, 2017, via his Instagram account that he would sacrifice his remaining eligibility and enter the 2018 NFL Draft. He also made the decision to forego the 2017 Independence Bowl as a result of his choice.

James participated at the Indianapolis NFL Scouting Combine and finished the bulk of the workouts, skipping the three-cone and short shuttle.

Scouts and draft gurus were thrilled by his performance at the combine, when he placed third among defensive backs in the bench press and ninth among safeties in the 40-yard dash. Additionally, he placed sixth in the vertical and fifth overall among defensive backs in the broad jump.

James took part in Florida State’s pro day on March 20, 2018, but he decided to stand on his combined numbers and simply run the brief shuttle, the three-cone drill, and the positional drills. James visited the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during pre-draft visits as well, but he reportedly rejected to participate in a private workout with the Buccaneers, who had the 12th overall choice.

James was predicted by NFL draft analysts and scouts to be selected in the first round at the completion of the pre-draft process. He was anticipated to be selected among the first 15 players.

DraftScout.com ranked him as the best free safety prospect in the draft, and Mike Mayock, an NFL analyst, and Sports Illustrated both ranked him as the second-best safety.

James was chosen by the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft (17th overall). James was selected in the second round of the 2018 draft, behind Alabama safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (11th overall, Miami Dolphins).

James inked a four-year, $12.38 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers on June 1 that was fully guaranteed and included a $7.09 million signing bonus.

James was expected to start at strong safety when the season began, but a hamstring injury prevented that from happening. Adrian Phillips and Rayshawn Jenkins, two seasoned actors, were also vying for the position, in his opinion.

In the Los Angeles Chargers 38-28 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, he made his first career start and his first regular-season debut as a professional, making three combined tackles, breaking up two passes, and sacking quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

James developed a stress fracture in his right foot, which was discovered on August 15. Surgery was required to treat the injuries, and the recovery time was only three months. On September 1, 2019, he went on injured reserve.

After having surgery to repair a torn meniscus, James was put on season-ending injured reserve on September 5, 2020.

On December 15, 2020, the team placed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and on January 7, 2021, they returned him to injured reserve.

James’ contract’s fifth-year option was exercised by the Chargers on April 30, 2021, securing a $9.05 million salary for the 2022 campaign. James was selected to play in his second Pro Bowl on December 22, 2021.

James extended his contract with the Chargers for four years and $76.4 million on August 17, 2022. Of that sum, $42 million was guaranteed. James was named to his third Pro Bowl on December 21, 2022.
