Teddy Swims was born to Glenna Robel and Fred Robel. We have no details about his siblings at the moment. His family were football enthusiasts; he had been playing football for ten years when one of his teachers suggested he and a few of his teammates sign up for a musical theater class.

Swims started his musical career by playing in a number of Atlanta-based bands, such as cover bands for hair metal and soul, as well as alternative rock groups WildHeart and Eris, a post-hardcore group.

Swims’ friend Addy Maxwell asked him to rap over some of his beats at the beginning of 2019, and that invitation led to the two of them landing the opening spot on Tyler Carter’s U.S. tour.

He started performing under the moniker Teddy Swims for this tour, which is a play on a childhood nickname that made fun of his girth and an internet acronym for “someone who isn’t me sometimes,” which alludes to the idea of combining the various facets of his personality.

After uploading his debut rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” on YouTube in June, Swims went on to frequently publish covers of other musicians from a variety of genres, such as Lewis Capaldi, Chris Stapleton, Amy Winehouse, and H.E.

As of 2022, his October cover of Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” had received 86 million views, making it his most popular video.

Swims released his six-track EP Tough Love in January 2022, following the popularity of his single “911”. In January, Swims appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and in February, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she performed “Love for a Minute” and “911”.

Swims promoted the EP with a three-month European and North American headline tour that started in February and included stops in the UK and continental Europe in May and June.

Swims co-wrote “Bad For Me” with Meghan Trainor, which became the album’s debut single on June 24. The song was performed by Swims and Trainor on The Late Late Show with James Corden in August and Jimmy Kimmel Live! in June.

Additionally, Swims worked with Mitchell Tenpenny, Illenium, MK and BURNS, and TELYKAST on singles. Swims recorded a cover of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” and released it in August, following the publication of a brief performance footage in May.

Together with Journey’s founding guitarist Neal Schon and season 14 champion Kodi Lee, Swims played the song on America’s Got Talent.

On November 4, 2022, Swims released his EP Sleep Is Exhausting following the release of his singles “Dose,” “2 Moods,” “Someone Who Loved You,” and “Devil in a Dress.”

Swims worked with Meghan Trainor, Elley Duhé, X Ambassadors, Armin van Buuren & Matoma in 2023. Swims was the featured performer for the Together For A Better Day concert held at Avicii Arena on December 6, 2023.
