Manute Bol experienced two significant chapters of marriage in his life. His first marriage, marked by its private nature, was an integral part of his personal journey. After the conclusion of this initial union, Manute Bol entered into a second marriage with a woman named Ajok Deng.

This second marriage, marked by love and companionship, played a pivotal role in Bol’s life. It was during this period that he continued to pursue his passion for both basketball and humanitarian causes. His dedication to helping those in need, particularly in his native Sudan, was undoubtedly supported and strengthened by the presence of his second wife, Ajok Deng.

Born on October 16, 1962, Bol’s basketball journey commenced after his college basketball career with the Bridgeport Purple Knights. In the 1985 NBA draft, the Washington Bullets selected him. This marked the start of Bol’s NBA career, which spanned from 1985 to 1995. As a center, Bol gained recognition as one of the most formidable shot-blockers in the sport’s history. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the only NBA player to retire with more career blocked shots than points scored. 

Apart from his contributions to the world of basketball, Bol made significant efforts to advocate for human rights in his native Sudan, particularly concerning the plight of Sudanese refugees.

Bol’s initial foray into sports began with soccer in 1972. However, his towering stature led him to abandon soccer, and he transitioned to basketball during his later teenage years. In Sudan, he faced prejudices from the northern Sudanese majority while playing with teams in Wau and Khartoum.

In May 1985, Bol turned professional by signing with the Rhode Island Gulls in the spring United States Basketball League. Scouts had initially believed that Bol needed more time in college, but he chose to enter the NBA draft to secure the necessary funds to help his sister escape the political unrest in Sudan at the time.

The Washington Bullets selected Bol in the second round as the 31st overall pick in the 1985 NBA draft. Bol’s first stint with the Bullets lasted three seasons, from 1985 to 1988. During his rookie season, he showcased his shot-blocking prowess, setting numerous records and making a remarkable impact.

In 1988, the Bullets traded Bol to the Golden State Warriors. Bol continued to make his mark by attempting three-point shots with regularity, further diversifying his playing style.

In 1990, Bol was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, where he played three seasons. Although his production began to decline over time, Bol remained a unique and memorable presence on the court.

Bol briefly played for the Miami Heat, and he made a short return to the Washington Bullets for two games in 1993.

Afterward, Bol’s second stint with the 76ers lasted for four games, during which he mentored teammate Shawn Bradley. Bol returned to the Golden State Warriors for the 1994–95 NBA season. His career experienced a resurgence under head coach Don Nelson, but it was unfortunately cut short by a knee injury.

Bol’s final NBA stint was with the Golden State Warriors, where he was waived on February 15, 1995. Over his NBA career, Bol averaged 2.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 0.3 assists, and 3.3 blocks per game, appearing in 624 games over 10 seasons. He accumulated 1,599 points, 2,647 rebounds, and 2,086 blocks.

Bol played 22 games for the Florida Beach Dogs in the Continental Basketball Association during the 1995–96 season. Following his professional career in the United States, Bol continued to play in Italy in 1997 and Qatar in 1998 until rheumatism forced him into retirement.

Manute Bol’s legacy transcends the basketball court, as he will always be remembered for his towering presence, shot-blocking ability, and unwavering dedication to humanitarian causes.
